What is Counselling?
Counselling provides a safe, focused and confidential space where a client can explore problems they have, or aspects of their lives that they are not happy with. These may include experiences of loss or change, anxiety, depression, confidence or relationship worries. There may be unhappiness in the present, concerns about experiences in the past, or fears about the future. Whatever the reason for considering counselling, no problem is too big or too small.
Counselling is aimed at helping people to understand their feelings and emotions better and to develop their own solutions to problems - to put their thoughts into words, and in doing so, gain some understanding and control over them. It is also an opportunity to learn new coping skills, to become better organised or to seek an answer about a life dilemma. This process can enable you to gain new perspective on problems, discover inner resources, and build the strength to make meaningful choices and live a more satisfying life.
You will be encouraged to talk openly and honestly about your concerns, without being interrupted, judged or criticised - and for many, this is a tremendous relief.
Counselling may not make any problems you have to go away, but it can help you cope with them. It can also help you accept what cannot be changed and support you whilst you do all this.
Counselling is not...
...about others, it is about you and therefore the session will be focused on you. Counselling does not involve giving advice or prescribing solutions to problems because the aim is to help you run your life more effectively, not to run it for you.
